Many people today often suffer from headaches or even recurring migraine attacks. Headaches often occur in life situations that are stressful or in which those affected are heavily challenged or stressed. The causes and symptoms of headaches are varied. But if someone worries too much at work or privately and can no longer switch off mentally, too much energy is literally stuck in their head. The well-being and performance of those affected suffer as a result.

Release blockages and understand connections
Persistent headaches are a common reason why a Shiatsu therapist is contacted. The focus of a Shiatsu therapy is not the treatment of individual symptoms, but a holistic approach. In practice, Shiatsu therapists often find that those affected who suffer from persistent headaches also show other symptoms and are very demanding, stressed and therefore very tense in everyday life. During treatment, these clients often experience tension in the neck, shoulders, chest and entire back. As a result, these body zones are not supplied with enough blood, oxygen and nutrients, which leads to blockages and stagnation in the flow of life energy. The gentle and yet appropriately strong pressure characteristic of Shiatsu supports the organism of those affected in letting go physically and mentally, in relaxing and in feeling a deep inner peace, opening and space. Tensions are released in the whole body, which often represent the concrete trigger mechanism of the headache. At the same time, the treatment supports the self-regulation ability of the organism. Another important part of Shiatsu therapy is the accompanying discussion, which enables the client to recognize the connection between the headache and her life situation.
A practical example
A 19-year-old schoolgirl suffers from a headache. A first palpation finding shows that the neck, shoulder and jaw muscles are particularly tense. In the accompanying conversation, the young woman expresses that she has been feeling a great deal of stress due to the upcoming Matura exam for a few weeks. A high basic tension can be detected throughout the body. It appears contracted, the connective tissue is somewhat rigid and “glued together”. It’s as if there wasn’t enough room for herself. During the treatment, the Shiatsu therapist releases existing tension and stimulates flexibility, movement and flow in the body. Accompanying the treatment, the client learns simple physical and breathing exercises, which she can easily integrate into her daily routine. These exercises will help her to relax quickly. The accompanying conversation shows that the preparation for the Matura exam had a strong impact on the client’s time management. She reports that she hasn’t had time to exercise for a few weeks. Solutions are sought in dialogue as to how sport can be reintegrated into everyday life without restricting the learning time. After eight treatments, the treatment series can be completed.
