Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a very special phase of a woman’s life. It is associated with ongoing changes in the organism that affect every cell. The body is challenged to offer the growing child the necessary conditions for maturing. The pregnant woman begins to develop an emotional relationship with the unborn child. She has to prepare for the fact that her own life, her partnership and the family situation will change. Many phases of pregnancy are experienced as particularly happy and fulfilled. However, fatigue or sleep problems, back pain, mood swings and nausea also occur during pregnancy. The changes in life situation can trigger worries and fears.

How does Shiatsu work during pregnancy?

In their specialist book, the Shiatsu teacher Susanne Yates and the midwife Tricia Anderson show how Shiatsu can be supportive in many different ways: The Shiatsu treatment has a relaxing, nourishing and soothing effect. It helps to get in tune with the baby physically and emotionally while also being good in your own body and in yourself. The treatment can provide relief from pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness, back and neck pain, and abdominal and pelvic tightness. For example, nausea is energetically an upward movement. By strengthening the downward energy channels, a balance is found again. Shiatsu promotes serenity and basic trust and helps to reduce fears. The unborn is also supported. Shiatsu promotes the optimal position for birth, the child’s relaxation during and after birth and the child’s general resilience. The treatment can provide pain relief during labor and relief during labour. After birth, it can promote recovery, stimulate milk production and counteract postnatal depression. In addition to the treatment, Shiatsu therapists support the clients through discussions and exercise instructions. The therapeutic accompaniment supports the pregnant woman to get in the right mood for the current and upcoming changes and to become clear about her emotions and needs. Physical and breathing exercises help her to relax better and to strengthen her basic trust.

A practical example

Ms. R. is a teacher and four months pregnant with her first child when she registers for Shiatsu. During the first interview, Ms R. seems “top-heavy”. She is full of worries and fears about the pregnancy, her professional and financial future, her future role as a single parent. Ms. R. can already relax deeply during the first treatment. She can feel well-being and peace within herself. In the course of the further treatments she manages to arrive more and more in her own body and in her centre. The touch in Shiatsu helps her to get involved with her feelings and to gain joy in being pregnant and to consciously perceive the developing being. More and more she gives up her excessively strong need to have everything under control all the time and allows the experience of vitality. Towards the end of pregnancy, insecurity and fear of childbirth resurface. Shiatsu strengthens your basic trust and your inherent power. Ms R. and the unborn child are supported in detaching themselves from the phase of pregnancy, letting go of the old and orienting themselves towards the future. After the birth of her daughter, Ms. R. applied for further accompaniment with Shiatsu in childbirth. She tells of a wonderful birth experience that she was allowed to experience.
