Stress

More and more people today feel challenged at work or are confronted with private strokes of fate that put a heavy strain on them. It is particularly serious when various stress factors come together and those affected have the feeling that they can no longer solve the problems or positively influence situations. If this feeling lasts longer, health problems often arise. The diverse symptoms suffered by those affected range from tension and pain to insomnia and cardiovascular problems.

Recognizing stress patterns and promoting resilience

Physical and psychological symptoms caused by stress are among the most common reasons for Shiatsu treatment. Although clients often seek the support of a Shiatsu practitioner for one of the symptoms described above, Shiatsu does not address a single symptom, but takes a holistic approach to recovery. Shiatsu therapy is about finding out where a person’s resources are, in order to promote body awareness and self-responsibility for one’s own health and thus support the possibility of self-regulation. In addition, those affected are instructed on how to successfully deal with stressful living conditions and how to strengthen their resilience. They should learn that they can influence changes and initiate them consciously.

A practical example

A nearly 50-year-old sales representative receives a management position and takes over his own team in the office. The managerial responsibility demands a lot from him. He wakes up more and more at night and can’t get back to sleep. He also suffers from flatulence and dizziness. When the abdomen and chest are touched, swollen and hardened areas appear. The therapist guides the client to breathe calmly and deeply into these spots to explore them from within and feel the body. Breathing deeply and calmly opens the lungs. The client feels the chest expand and the upper body move. At the same time, the gentle pressure of the hands triggers strong emotions in him, which are recorded and processed in the accompanying conversation. It also shows that mental injuries from childhood and adulthood weigh on the client, which come to the surface due to the stressful work situation.

After a few treatments, the tension in the chest and abdomen decreases and the mind calms down more and more. After two months, the client can go about his everyday life more easily. He falls asleep better and hardly ever wakes up at night, making him less tired during the day. The flatulence has also decreased. In the course of therapy, it also becomes apparent that the dizzy spells are always directly related to being overwhelmed either personally or professionally. Finally, he decides to hand over management responsibility. Thanks to Shiatsu, he found out what is important for his well-being. He has learned to formulate his wishes and not to exceed his own limits. Even after changing jobs, he continues the treatment at longer intervals in order to continue to strengthen his personal resources and to develop even better access to his own body. The therapy was completed after six months.
